Introducing Tohan from Madagascar

Andrianina Jamuelle

Co-Founder of Tohan

My name is Andrianina. I am the co-founder of Tohan, a natural beauty company based in Madagascar.

Since I was a child, my mother always encouraged me to only use natural products for my skin and hair. She used to put coconut oil on my hair since I was a baby; weekly masks with clay, cucumber juice or honey on my face during my teenage years.

When I moved to South Africa for my university studies, I started to try using conventional skincare products. However, I developed different skin reactions and allergies from them. So I started to do some research and I was shocked by the danger I was exposed into. More than 80% of personal care products I use daily are unsafe, can cause serious skin problems, hormonal problems or even cancer!

So now what to use to take care of my skin? I switched back to natural products like honey and as I started reading ingredients lists, I realized that I was using fake honey! That was a huge turning point that really pushed me to be extra careful with what I consume and put on my body.

Hence, to be safe, I brought products from Madagascar when I went home for the holidays.

Then, one day, a friend invited me for lunch. The rice was so pleasantly fragranced, yet very subtle. She told me that she had added one teaspoon of coconut oil in, and I was surprised. She started to share with me the different usages and benefits of coconut oil. It made me very curious because texture, smell, and color were different from what I was familiar with.

I started using the odorless coconut oil, because how I remember coconut oil in Madagascar, the smell always made me nauseous. It gave me good results but it stained my clothes. So as soon as I finished my jar, I looked up on the internet what kind of coconut oil is the best. It turned out that the odorless one has been transformed and do not contain all its healthy nutrients anymore. I took the risk and bought the virgin coconut oil, cold pressed, and the color had to be pure white when solid and transparent when liquid. I was surprised because I liked the smell, it was agreeable, and no stains on my clothes!

I started exploring and used it for different purposes such as a skin moisturizer, hair oil, mouthwash, cooking oil, highlighter and many more!

It became a huge part of my life and I started sharing about it with my friends and family.

Hair Oils by Tohan

With my long time high school friend, being both beauty lovers, we decided to create an instagram account where we would share products that either worked for us or not, to help people like us, and because we weren’t going to do this to earn money and become influencers, we thought that it would be more relatable. But we never ended up starting that account, we had this thought to create our own products and why not coconut oil? Her aunt is also used to make her own at home so we learnt from her, with refined formulation after intensive research.

And that’s how our brand was born, Tohan, which is literally the fusion of both of our second names. And after a few months later, we found our slogan which is derived from our name, Treasuring Our Health And Nature.

But what makes Tohan coconut oil different from any other?

Yes it is pure, unadulterated, cold pressed like most of coconut oils in the market. However, our unique process of extraction allows the oil to be very light hence easily absorbed by the skin. The smell is amazingly delicious, yet subtle, that it is one of the reasons why our customers buy it! We also ensure that it always meets the finest quality by using organically grown coconuts from the city of Sambava, which is one of the biggest producers of coconuts in the island.

Tohan also provides job opportunities to young Malagasy women from disadvantaged backgrounds. They are part of our production team and each product sold contributes to a decent salary for them.
